What To Know Before Off-Roading

2025 INEOS Grenadier Station Wagon driving through water

If you want to go off-roading outside Greenbrier or Mt. Juliet for the first time, the right preparation is key. In addition to driving a reliable off-road vehicle that features four-wheel drive and sufficient ground clearance and traction control, you’ll need an off-road recovery kit. There are also several essential tips to keep in mind before and during your adventure. To help you stay safe and have fun, the team at Victory INEOS Grenadier put together the following guide. Review off-road driving basics and what to include in your recovery kit, and then browse our inventory. We offer some of the best off-road SUVs on the market, and are happy to schedule your test drive. If you have questions about any of the following information, please let us know.

Off-Road Driving Basics

Most off-road vehicles feature four-wheel drive, though all-wheel drive vehicles are also used for off-roading. Get to know your selected vehicle by reviewing how its drive system operates, the exact ground clearance, and its approach and departure angles. The right tires are essential as well, such as those that can accommodate mud, sand, or rocky terrain. Tires designed for muddy conditions won’t work well on sand, for example.

Once you’re familiar with your chosen vehicle, research the trails’ difficulty and typical weather conditions. You’ll also want to look for closures before heading out; we recommend utilizing off-roading apps for the most up-to-date information. If a trail looks complicated or isn’t well-maintained, avoid it.

Off-road driving basics also include riding with at least one friend or family member. Never off-road alone for safety reasons. If none of your friends or family members are interested in off-roading, look for local off-road groups in your area.

Stick to easy trails on your first off-roading adventure before graduating to more challenging terrain. Pack plenty of supplies, including:

  • Water
  • First aid kit
  • Spare tire
  • Food
  • Extra clothes
  • Fire extinguisher
  • FRS/GMRS radio
  • Towels
  • Wet wipes

Off-Road Recovery Kit: What To Include

Off-roading equipment makes up this essential kit, such as a quality winch that streamlines pulling your vehicle out of mud, sand, or a rut. Additional recommended off-road recovery kit supplies include recovery straps or ropes to help pull vehicles out of mud, sand, and assorted ditches, and a shovel to remove debris around tires and improve traction. You’ll also want to include a tire repair kit and a winch damper that covers the winch during pulling activities. It prevents the winch from hitting you and causing injuries if it snaps.

Further off-road recovery kit supplies include a snatch block, or a type of pulley that redirects the pull angle and increases the winch’s strength. It’s also a good idea to invest in thick gloves to protect your hands when pulling ropes.
